Erastus Cleveland, a resident of Avon, Lake County, IL enlisted at the age of 17 on August 9, 1862 with a rank of Private.  He enlisted in Company B, Illinois 96th Infantry Regiment on September 5, 1862; mustered out on May 13, 1865 at Nashville, TN.  Biography: Cleveland, Erastus T. Resides Lake Villa, Illinois; born August 26, 1844, at Columbia County, New York; father, John C. (born July 24, 1807, in New York state), mother, Mary Ann Tyler (born November 3, 1813).  Married Caroline Marble November 30, 1867; children: John S., Katherine and Mary A.  Enlisted July 13, 1862, at Avon, Lake County, Ill., Company B, Ninety-sixth Illinois Infantry; wounded in hand at Kenesaw Mountain, losing one finger of left hand; discharged May 13, 1865, Nashville, Tenn.  Settled in county March, 1882, at Sutherland.  Member Ord Post, G.A.R., Sutherland.  Source: Old Soldiers of O’Brien County, Iowa

According to “The Genealogy of the Cleveland and Cleaveland Families” by Edmund Janes Cleveland and Horace Gillette Cleveland, Vol. 1. Hartford, Conn. 1899:

   “John Milton Cleveland accompanied his widowed mother to Illinois, 1845, and settle first on a farm in Avon township, 1 mile from Hainesville, where he thereafter lived, and where his widow res. 1884-95.”

   “ERASTUS TYLER CLEVELAND (John Milton, Wm., Eleaser, Sam. Sam.), m. Avon, Ill., Nov. 30, 1867, Caroline Marble, b. A. Mar. 5, 1849, da. Solomon and Catherine Bingama (Converse).  Of Sutherland, O’Brien co., Ia., 1882), hotel proprietor.  Ch. B. Avon: 9726 John Solomon Cleveland, Jan. 20, 1870. Catharine Converse, Feb. 24, 1875.”
