According to the Chicago Tribune (Chicago IL) Tuesday, September 8, 1925, page 6:

DEFIES RESCURERS;
LEAPS TO DEATH
AS HE PROMISED

   A leap from the roof of an abandoned building at 2723 Cambridge avenue, formerly the nurses’ home of Grant hospital, yesterday ended the life of William Davis, a 50 year old watchman, after he had balanced himself on the edge of the roof for two hours, defying policemen to capture him.  He is believed to have been demented.
   Hearing that a man was on the roof, screaming and waving his hands, Policemen Franklin Martyn and Frank Krueger mounted the stairs inside.  As their heads emerged from the trapdoor, Davis screamed at them.
   “I’m not a coward!  If you come any nearer I’ll jump!”
   For two hours the policemen pleaded with him.  Patrolman Walter Holter then crawled onto the roof, and as he reached it, Davis jumped, his body landing almost beside Martyn, who with Krueger had returned to the sidewalk.
   A farewell note and a will were found on the roof.  The will directed that all his belongings be given to Joseph Flynn, 2329 Wentworth avenue, a fellow-employe.
   Flynn said Davis had inspected ammunition for the British government during the war, but lately had believed a woman was pursuing him.  An inquest will be held this morning at 2335 North Clark street.”
