“A HEART FELT TRIBUTE
TO A GOOD WOMAN
Mention was made in the local column of this paper last week of the passing away of Mrs. Byron Gilman at Redington, and statement was made that a more extended obituary would be published at a later date; yet the writer feels at a loss for words to pay fitting tribute to the high character of the one who is gone.
If deeds of charity and kindness, done always in a spirit of cheerfulness and tenderness count for anything, this good woman has builded a monument for herself in the memories of those who knew her best, so high and so large that we can add nothing to it. She has been known in the locality where she lived as “Grandma Gilman,” and her name has been synonymous with the love and helpfulness. To the writer especially she had been as a best friend for many years. Years ago, when times were not as they are now, she placed us under obligations never to be forgotten. She was the first to hold our first born in her motherly arms; and later she ministered to us and to ours when other help could not be had. She had considerable skill in medicine and in healing, and during the early days of this part of the west she was sought for from far and near in sickness and suffering. No family was too poor to receive her help, nor was any distance too great to go when she was needed. She took relief to those in pain, comforted the dying and cheered the hearts of those who were bereached. In the role of an angel of mercy and charity she never failed and her regard should be great.
Amelia bliss was born in Ohio in the year 1838. She was married to Byron Gilman at Fennimore, Wis., on July 4, 1858. To this union were born six children, four of whom are now living. The ones now living are Mrs. F. Hayes, Mrs. Thomas Wilcox, Fred Gilman and Sherman Gilman. One son, Dick Gilman, died in Bridgeport a few years ago. The deceased came to Redington with her family in 1887 and lived there to the time of her death. Her husband conducted a drug store at that place about fifteen years ago and is now engaged in farming and stock raising.
Funeral services were conducted at the family residence at Redington last Friday afternoon by Rev. Davis of Bridgeport and burial was made at Redington cemetery. Many persons from this place attended the services and an extremely large number of friends accompanied the body to its last resting place.”
