  • Mother: Comfort (Bristol) Scovill born in Harwinton, Litchfield County, CT; Comfort died July 15, 1808 in Harwinton, Litchfield County, CT.
  • Wife: Emiline Bellamy born March 24, 1799; married (1) Warren Scovill on January 21, 1821 in Allegany County, NY; Emiline married (2) Thomas Spencer, Jr. (1789-1881) on March 10, 1858 in Waupaca County, WI as his second wife; Thomas, was the son of Thomas Spencer (1755-1940) (Revolutionary War Veteran, Connecticut, Sergeant) and Huldah (Oakes) Spencer (1772-1863); Thomas Jr. was a War of 1812 Veteran, 8th New York Militia, Sergeant; Emeline’s death and burial are unknown, probably occurred between 1860-1862; Thomas is buried in Lakeside Memorial Park, Waupaca, Waupaca County, WI

    3. Willoughby L. E. Scovill born December 12, 1826 in Portage, Livingston County, NY; married Phoebe E. Belden (1827-1896) on September 7, 1849, daughter of Ephraim Belding and Elizabeth Belding;  She served as Postmaster of Forksville (Volo), Lake County, IL starting October 9, 1866; Phoebe married (2) Hiram Rogers on September 26, 1868 in Lake County, IL; In 1870 Phoebe and her five children were living in Waukegan, Lake County, IL; She married (3) Alpheus T. Parks on June 6, 1877 in Pleasant Prairie, Kenosha County, WI; Willoughby died September 16, 1865 or 1866; buried in Volo Cemetery, Volo, Lake County, IL
    4. Willard F. Scovill born April 19, 1829 in Portage, Livingston County, NY; Civil War Veteran (February 29, 1864-January 7, 1865), Company F, 39th Illinois Infantry, Waukegan, married (1) Hannah Bradbury in 1853; married (2) Eliza A. Clemens (1836-1886) in 1868; Willard died March 23, 1908 at the home of his son in Wisconsin; Willard and Eliza are buried in Arlington Cemetery, Arlington, Brookings County, SD

According to the Memorial and Biographical….:

“Mr. Barber married Miss Eva M. Soville, in Dodge county, Minnesota, on the 1st of June, 1871. Barber was born February 15, 1856, and was one of twins in a family of six.  Her father, Willard F. Scoville, married Hannah Bradbury, in 1853.  He subsequently remarried after the death of his first wife.  Mr. Scoville was a brickmaker and a stone quarrier.  When the war broke out he enlisted in the Forty-fourth Illinois Regiment, and took part in the Peninsular campaign.  He was wounded in his left leg during the first fight in which he was engaged, but his injury was not serious, and he later joined his command.  Mrs. Barber’s grandfather was born in New York, on the Genesee river, and was a hatter by trade.  He removed to Waukegan at an early date, when the great city of Chicago was a village, consisting but six or eight houses.  He died in Waukegan in 1857…”

According to an unsourced newspaper (most likely from Hetland, South Dakota):

“WILLIARD F. SCOVILLE. –  Hetland New Era: Word was received here on Monday that W. F. Scoville had died in Wisconsin and would be brought to Arlington where the funeral was held Wednesday.  It has been known that Mr. Scoville had not well all winter but not until a short time ago was he considered dangerous.  He suffered a stroke of paralysis and from this he never recovered.  At the time of death he was nearly 79 years of age.  OBITUARY. – Willard Scoville was born at Portage, New York. April 19, 1829.  His folks moved to Illinois in 1840 and settled near where Waukegon (sic) now is.  He was married to Hannah Bradbury, Nov. 14, 1853.  To this union was born six children 0 one boy and five girls – of whom all but one are living.  When the war of the rebellion broke out he was a guard at the Joliet state prison.  He enlisted in company F. of the 39th Illinois volunteer infantry and was wounded in battle of Fair Oaks.  This would never healed but had to be dressed twice a day as long as he lived.  While he was in the hospital at Hampton Roads there eight sick or wounded in one tent.  This tent was entered by death four times while he lay there.  After the war he and his wife separated and in 1868 he married Eliza Clemans, and to them were born nine children – four of whom are now living.  He moved to South Dakota in 1885 and settled on a farm northeast of here.  His second wife died at his home on June 30, 1886 and was laid to rest in the Arlington cemetery.  He moved from the farm to Hetland in 1901 and lived here until the fall of 1906 when he went to Wautoma, Wis, to live with a brother.  Last summer he went back to his birthplace with his daughter, Carrie, and spent sometime among the scenes of his boyhood, and found some people with whom he had played when a child.  He died on Monday, March 23, at the home of a son where he had been for a few weeks.  Thus another old soldier has joined the ranks of the mighty army that is crossing the river to the other side.”

(Scovill) Dutcher born January 9, 1831 in Portage, Livingston County, NY; married Oscar Dutcher about 1848; In 1960, Sarah Dutcher was living in Parfreyville, Waupaca County, WI with her husband and three children including her younger brother, Lyman Scovill; By 1865 the family was living in Faribault County, MN; Sarah died November 28, 1866 in Faribault County, MN; buried in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Faribault County, MN.

6. Chauncey W. Scoville born May 21, 1833 in Portage, Livingston County, NY; Civil War Veteran (February 15, 1865-January 24, 1866), Company B, 151st Illinois Infantry, Corporal; married (1) Mary Jane Seymour (1839-1883), daughter of Wright Seymour (1813-1888) and Nancy Melissa (Bishop) Seymour (1817-1892); married (2) Orlinda O. Ellsworth on April 5, 1885 in Waushara County, WI; Chauncey died December 15, 1909; Chauncey and Mary Jane are buried in Marion Cemetery, Wautoma, Waushara County, WI.

8. Lyman B. Scoville born December 13, 1837 in Portage, Livingston County, NY; Civil War Veteran (recruited October 2, 1861, re-enlisted as Veteran, February 28, 1864-May 15, 1866 from Goodale (Grant) Illinois) Company C, 37th Illinois Infantry, Sergeant; married Margaret Ann Thompson on November 23, 1867; Lyman died May 9, 1905; buried in Riverside Cemetery, Blue Earth Faribault County, MN

“Chester was a farmer and made several changes, removing first to New York State, thence to Loraine county, Ohio. He lived for some time in Ionia, Michigan, and in 1867 went to Minnesota, where he passed the rest of his life.”

According to the Hartford Courant (Hartford CT) Saturday, April 13, 1878, page 2:

JONES – In Harwinton, April 4, Mrs. Maria Jones, widow of Julius Jones, age 72 years.”

Additional Information:

(NOTE: Warren Scovill’s ancestral third great grandfather, Arthur Scovil, came from Dorset, England and “emigrated to New England shortly after the Restoration in 1660”.  Arthur removed from Boston, MA to Middletown, CT in 1670.  Generations of Scovill’s lived in Connecticut until Warren moved west to Portage, Livingston County, NY  about 1820 where all of his children were born.  Finally, he and his family moved to Waukegan, Lake County, Il in the fall of 1842.)

According to the Illinois, Public Land Purchase Records, 1813-1909:

“Name: Warren Scoville; Section: NWNW; Price per Acre: 1.25; Total Price: 50.00; Date: 6 Feb 1844; Volume: 686; Page: 111; Type: FD; Sect: 27; Township: 45N; Range: 10 E; Meridian: 3; Acres: 40.00; Corr-Tag: 9; ID: 075816; Reside: 000”

According to the Scoville Family Records, Part III, Harwinton (Conn.) Branch by Charles R. Eastman. 1911, page 13:

“Warren Scoville (Abner, Ezekiel, Ezekiel, Stephen) born at Harwinton Aug. 24, 1798; married Evelyn Bellamy, Jan. 1, 1821.  She was born Mar. 24, 1799.  He died Oct. 10, 1844, at Waukegan, Illinois, killed at a log raising, or felling timber.  Warren went from Connecticut to New York state about 1820, settling at Portage, where he lived until 1833, and then removed farther west.  In the fall of 1842 he located in Illinois, at Waukegan, or Lake City.”

According to “Arthur Scovell and His Descendants in America 1660-1900” compiled by Jennie M. (Scoville) Holley and Homer Worthington Brainard. Rutland VT. 1941. page 108:

   “Warren Scoville left Connecticut about 1820 and settled in Portage, N.Y.  He sold his place there in 1833 and went to peddling for a while.  He moved to Illinois in 1842 and settled at Waukegan.  At a log raising the log did not fall or move as Warren meant it should and it fell across his body with fatal results.  he had gone to the place accompanied only by his youngest son, then a boy of seven or eight years.  Warren’s family became scattered, but in 1850 four of them were living in Lake County, Ill., some forty miles north of Chicago.”

According to the Illinois, U.S., Wills and Probate Records, 1772-1999 (Lake County, IL documents for the deceased, Warren Scovill):

“KNOW all men by these presents, that we, Abner Scovil and Horace Ralph of the County of Lake and State of Illinois are held and firmly bound unto the People of the State of Illinois in the penal sum of Five hundred dollars, current money of the United States which payment, well and truly to be made and performed, we, each of us, bind ourselves our heirs, executors, administrators, and assigns, jointly, severally, and firmly by these presents.  Witness our hands and seals, this Twentieth day of January A. D. 1845.” – Warren Scovil, Bond of Administration

“THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, TO Solomon Fox, Garius Garwood and (James) Sullivan of the county of Lake and State of Illinois, Greeting: This is to authorize you, jointly, to appraise the goods, chattels and personal estate of Warren Scovil late of the county of Lake and state of Illinois deceased, so far as the same shall come to your sight and knowledge, each of you having first taken the oath [or affirmation] hereto annexed; a certificate whereof you are to return, annexed to an appraisement bill of said goods, chattels, and personal estate, by you appraised, in dollars and cents, and in the said bill of appraisement you are to set down in a column or columns, opposite to each article appraised, the value thereof. Probate J.P for the said county of Lake at his office in Little Fort this 20th day of January A.D. 1845” – Signed by Levi Marble – J.P.

(NOTE: attached was a inventory list of assets which totaled $139.00) The following was also documented:

“The Northwest qr of Sec 27 Township 45 N. R 9E. also the Northwest qr of the Northwest qr of Sec 27 Township 45N R 10E.
   I Abner Scovil, Administrator of the Estate of the late Warren Scovil, deceased, hereby certify that the above is a true and perfect inventory of the property belonging to the said estate so far as the same has come to my sight & knowledge.
   Lake Co Ill March 3d 1845, Abner Scovill”

“I Emiline Scovill
Wife of the Late Warrin Scovill
Deceased late of the County of Lake do hereby Relinquish my right to a horse Saddle and Bridle and Provisions that is Allowed me by the 44th Section of the Statute of Wills And choose to take Other articles of Equal Value in lew thereof.” – Renounciation of Widow filed March 3d, 1845
