According to the Spirit Lake Beacon (Spirit Lake IA) Friday, March 11, 1898, page 3:

   “WHITE. At his home in Spirit Lake, March 7th, Edward N. White, of paralysis, aged 69 years.
   Death in this instance came as a relief from long suffering, the deceased having been an invalid and great sufferer for several years.  He was born in Cumington, Massachusetts, and when a small boy moved with his parents to Lake county, Ohio, later locating at Waukegan, Illinois, where he accumulated quite a fortune and united in marriage with Miss Hannah Hamlin, the companion who survives him, in 1854.  As a result of this union seven children were born – Loren, Charles, Newell, Horatio, Sadie and Mrs. A. H. Jemerson, one dying in infancy.  In 1881 the family came to this county, where they have since resided, with the exception of Loren and Newell, who for a number of years have resided at Estherville.  Misfortune in business exhausted the fortune of the deceased before coming to this county, and since his residence here he has been a very poor health most of the time.  He was a machinist and wheelwright by trade.
   Funeral services were conducted in the Presbyterian church by the pastor, Wednesday afternoon.
   The family keenly appreciate the kindness of neighbors and friends in their hour of affliction, and extend sincere thanks for the kind and thoughtful assistance rendered.”

According to the 1860 U.S. Census for the Town of Avon, Lake County, IL, with a Fox Lake post office, the household members were:

“Nahum White, age 58, Occupation: Farmer, born in Maine; Maria White, age 54, born in Maine; O. White, age 30, Occupation: Machinist, born in Maine; Edward White, age 29, Occupation: Farmer, born in Maine; Harriet White, age 30, born in New York; H. White, age 20, female, born in New York; Jenny White, age 1, born in Illinois; George Barr, age 35, Occupation: Farm Laborer, born in Scotland”
