Joseph Roth, well known resident of this city and for many years engaged as a blacksmith, passed away at the home at 1005 Polk street at 1:20 o’clock, yesterday afternoon. His death was attributed to a cancer that brought him untold suffering for more than six months.
Mr. Roth will be remembered as running a blacksmith shop here, and was engaged at this work until his healthy became such that he was forced to retire from active duty.
The deceased was born in Cologne, Germany on April 3, 1852. On May 12, 1877, he was united in marriage to Josephine Tix. The ceremony took place at Gilcer, Kirchen, Germany. Unto this union eleven children were born, eight of whom with the wife are left to mourn his passing. They are Joseph, Terre Haute, Ind., Mrs. Herman Gaas, Conrad, Frank, Charles and Mrs. Fred Shefler (sic) of this city; and Josephine, Chris and Len, deceased. He is also survived by a brother John of this city and Mrs. John Saltz of Stacyville.
The funeral services will be held at 9:30 o’clock Friday morning from St. Anthony’s church. Interment will be made in St. Anthony’s cemetery.”

Former friends of Mrs. Josephine Roth will regret to learn of her death, which occurred at Ottawa, Ill, Saturday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock, the cause of which was attributed to the information of old age, coupled with complications.
Mrs. Roth was a resident of Streator for many years, the wife of the late Joseph Roth, who preceded her in death, November 21, 1922, in this city. She leaves the following children; Mrs. Herman Gass(,) Conrad Roth, Streator: Frank Roth, Cherry; John Roth and Mrs. Fred Roth Scheffler, Chicago; Mrs. Charles Breimer, Blandon, Pa.; and Joseph Roth, Oden, Ind.
She was born in Auer Germany, August 26, 1857, and was united in marriage there with Mr. Roth on May 12, 1877, her maiden name having been Josephine Tix. They came to America many years ago and for a long time resided at 1005 Polk Street. During her residence here, she was a faithful member of St. Anthony’s church, and it will be from that place of worship that funeral services will be held on Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock, preceded by a short prayer at the Finlen Undertaking rooms in this city.”

Mrs. Donner, who was born in Streator, Ill., was a homemaker. “She was the most loving, caring person you’d ever want to meet,” said her husband of more than 62 years, Earl. “She was very talented, very creative. She was strictly a homemaker, the kind of person who makes a home out of a house.” Other survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Oswald; two sons, Phillip and Rev. Larry; two sisters, Lillian Adams and Billie Scheffler; a brother, Elmer Scheffler; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, when a service will begin in Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 1234 N. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights.”

A lifetime area resident, Mrs. Herman Gass died suddenly in her home at Rte. 4, Streator, Monday evening.
A requiem mass will be held in St. Mary’s church at Kangley at 9:30 a.m., Thursday,
Burial will be made in Ss. Peter and Paul cemetery.
Friends may call at the Solon Funeral Home after 4 p.m., Wednesday, with the rosary to be recited that same evening at 8 o’clock.
Mrs. Gass was born Oct. 28, 1880, daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine (Hicks)(sic) Roth. The former Catherine Roth married Herman Gass in Ss. Peter and Paul Church at Leonore in 1899. He died in 1956. Mrs. Gass had been a resident of Kangley and vicinity her entire life.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Sam (Elizabeth) Hastings of Streator; three sons, Leo Gass of Leonore; Alfred Gass of Alma Center, Wis.; Herman Gass of Merrilan, Wis., 30 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Mary Schettler (sic) of Crystal Lake, Ill.
Preceding her in death were one son, Raymond Gass, and two daughters, Mrs. Henry Melchers, and Mrs. Charles Gass.”

Frank F. Roth, 75, who lived in and around Streator for 50 years, died Friday in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Paul (Elizabeth) McCullough at Bensonville (sic), where he had resided for the past 23 years.
His body is at the Winterrowd Funeral Home where friends may call this evening. The final rites will be held in the funeral home Tuesday at 2 p. m. with burial in Riverview cemetery. Friends and relatives may contact the family at 107 Grove Street.
Born Feb. 7, 1885 in Leonore, he was the son of Joseph and Josephine (Dix) (sic) Roth. He was married to Mary Jane Wissen Oct. 1, 1906 in Chicago and they became the parents of three children.
Mr. Roth was a retired coal miner and carpenter. He was affiliated with the First Baptist Church.
In addition to his daughter in Bensonville (sic), he leaves his wife, and two sons, Alfred Roth of Trevose, Pa., and Frank J. Roth of Moline. There are three grandchildren.
Also left are the following sisters and brothers, Mrs. Emma Hairybird, South Dakota; Charles Roth, Chicago; Joseph Roth, Little Rock, Ark.; Mrs. Katherine Gass, and John Roth, both of Streator and Mrs. Mary Scheffler, Grays Lake.”

Conrad Roth of Dixon, 74, formerly of this vicinity, died this morning in Dixon, where he had resided the past several years.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Solon funeral home but arrangements are incomplete.
The deceased was born in Leonore to Joseph and Josephine (Tix) Roth. He spent most of his entire life here and was formerly employed at the American Bottle Company. He was never married.
Surviving are four brothers, Frank, John of Streator, Charles of Chicago, and Joseph of Hot Springs, Ark.; and three sisters, Mrs. Emma Briner, Mrs. Herman Gass of Streator, and Mrs. Mary Sheffler (sic) of Grays Lake. He was preceded in death by one brother, two sisters, and his parents.”

John Louis Roth, a resident of the Streator area all his life, died at 8:17 a. m. today at his home, 204 Heenan Avenue, following a lengthy illness. He had been in failing health several months.
Funeral services are scheduled Friday at 3 p.m. from the Wintercrowd chapel with burial occurring in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
The son of Joseph and Josephine (Tix) Roth, the deceased was born in Kangley. He was united in marriage with mae Carroll June 29, 1926 at Henderson, Ky.
Survivors include the widow, two children, Mrs. Orville (Delores) Rodgers of Streator and Carl Blair of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Scheffler of Grayslake, and Mrs. Katherine Goss of Streator, and two brothers, Charles Roth of Chicago and Joseph Roth of Hot Springs, Ark.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, three brothers and one sister.
Mr. Roth was a retired employee of the Anthony company. He was a member of the Hope Methodist church.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p. m. Thursday.”

Mrs. Emma R. Briner, 88, of Breinigsville R.2, died Friday in her home. She was the widow of Charles L. Briner.
She was a saleswoman for the former Lee’s Apparel, Allentown, for many years before retiring.
Born in Streator, Ill., she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Marie (Tix) Roth.
Since 1931, she raised 32 foster children in her home.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Trexlertown.
Surviving are three daughters, Charlotte, wife of Ralph Derr of Breinigsville R.2, Viola MacIntire of Blandon, Berks County, and Mabel, wife of Thrygve Meeker of Pottstown; two sons, Charles Briner of Breinigsville R.1 and Maurice McIntire of Crum Lynne, Delaware County; 19 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the church. A calling hour will precede the services in the church. The Schmoyer Funeral Home, Breinigsville, is in charge of arrangements.”

Miss Roth was born in Streator on Dec. 25, 1897, and leaves to mourn her death Mrs. Herman Goss (sic) of this city, Mrs. Louis McIntyre of Spring City, PA., Mrs. Fred Schaefer (sic) of this city, Joseph of Indiana, Conrad, Ruth, John, Charles and Frank of this city.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 9 o’clock at St. Anthony’s church and interment in St. Anthony’s cemetery.”

The marriage of Mr. Fred Scheffler and Miss Mary Roth will take place at 8 o’clock tonight at the home of the bride on West Grant street.
The ceremony will be performed by Rev. C. August Decker of St. Paul’s church. The attendants will be Mr. Richard Noon and Miss Nellie Franningan. Only the immediate relatives and friends will be present.
Theb ride (sic) is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Roth, who reside on West Grant street. For some time she has been employed as a waitress at the Columbia hotel and resigned her position there about a week ago.
The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Scheffler of 1713 Baker street and follows the vocation of a house decorator and painter.
The groom is a member of the Streator Stars ball team, and is a very valuable man, playing third base. he is very popular among the fans and his teammates.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. (sic) the home of the bride for the present but later may visit an aunt of the groom in Hammond, Ind.”
